The photograph shows a section of the densely packed crowd at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. In the foreground, two white women wearing sunglasses are visible, gazing intently in the same direction; their facial expressions convey concentrated attention. In the middle and background, further demonstrators of different races are discernible, sitting or standing in close proximity to one another. The image documents the broad, racially mixed participation in the event, which counted among the central characteristics of the march and made visible the alliance of white and black citizens in the civil rights movement. Banners or signs are not discernible in this section of the photograph.
