The night photograph shows the illuminated façade of the Marmorhaus cinema on the Kurfürstendamm in West Berlin. The glowing neon lettering and the UFA diamond logo above the large-format film poster for “Die Toteninsel” (directed by Victor Tourjansky, starring Willy Birgel and Inge Egger) lend the scene a vibrant atmosphere. The Marmorhaus, one of Berlin’s most prestigious cinemas, exemplifies the revitalized cultural landscape and consumer enthusiasm in mid-1950s West Berlin. The electric illumination and commercial cinema offerings on the Kurfürstendamm were a deliberate symbol of Western lifestyle—Berlin as the “showcase of the West” in contrast to the eastern part of the divided city.
