The still image shows a speaker at a podium equipped with multiple microphones, surrounded by hundreds of densely packed listeners. The image title and film context support the identification of Martin Luther King Jr. during his speech at the Lincoln Memorial. The photograph is taken from an elevated perspective and conveys the enormous density of the audience on the stage and in the immediate vicinity of the lectern. Among those present, people of various skin colors can be identified, reflecting the broad, multiracial participation of the march highlighted in the NARA description. The March on Washington on August 28, 1963 was one of the largest rallies of the U.S. civil rights movement and was directed against racial segregation as well as for civil rights and jobs.
