In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. Hundreds of thousands lined the streets along the routes of travel and gave Kennedy an enthusiastic reception. The photograph shows him standing in an open official car, surrounded by a densely packed crowd waving flags. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the Berlin Wall, which had been erected two years prior.
