Built between 1890 and 1897 by Friedrich von Thiersch, the Palace of Justice is one of the most distinctive buildings on the western side of Munich’s Stachus. Historically significant: the 1924 trial of Hitler and the participants in the Hitler Putsch took place here, and in 1943 the “People’s Court” condemned Hans and Sophie Scholl as well as Christoph Probst of the White Rose to death here. On 29 April 1945, units of the US 7th Army — led by the legendary 42nd Infantry Division (“Rainbow”) and the 45th Infantry Division (“Thunderbird”) — reached Munich’s city center. The former Nazi “Capital of the Movement” was taken with almost no resistance.
