The photograph shows a newly constructed residential settlement in West Berlin, consisting of a distinctive high-rise building and a lower row-house block, both featuring wraparound balconies and light-colored façades. The complex is organized by generous green spaces, young street trees, and broad pathways; a row of shops is visible on the ground floor of the high-rise. The photograph documents the residential construction realized in West Berlin during 1954/55 under the Marshall Plan. These settlements stood as exemplars of deliberate reconstruction and the emerging economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder) in the western part of the divided city. They simultaneously served as a visible signal of Western modernity and viability in contrast to East Berlin in the context of the Cold War.
