The still image shows a nighttime photograph of a Berlin shop façade, dominated by the brightly illuminated neon advertising of the German electronics company Telefunken in the upper portion of the frame. Below it, illuminated signs advertise PAA (Pan American World Airways) and point to the USA, underscoring West Berlin’s close economic and aviation connections with the United States. The presence of Pan American World Airways held strategic significance for West Berlin, as the airline was one of the few civilian US carriers linking West Berlin to the outside world. The juxtaposition of West German industrial and US aviation advertising on a single façade illustrates West Berlin’s role as the “showcase of the West” during the Cold War: consumption, modernity, and transatlantic networks were here deliberately staged as visible. The nighttime neon splendor stands in conscious contrast to the city’s simultaneous reconstruction and the ruins still present at the time.
