During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, thousands of onlookers lined the streets along the motorcade routes. The photograph shows women in professional nursing attire observing the events from a balcony. The spontaneous participation of broad segments of the population—even during working hours—illustrates the extraordinary enthusiasm that Kennedy’s visit sparked in the Federal Republic. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and Western solidarity with the divided city of Berlin.
