During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, a military reception ceremony took place on the airfield. Kennedy and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer stand together before Air Force One, while a Bundeswehr officer salutes. The visit took place under the shadow of the Cold War and served to reaffirm the transatlantic partnership as well as the American security guarantee for the Federal Republic of Germany.
