During his visit to Germany from June 23–26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy inspected American soldiers drawn up in formation in an open vehicle. The military ceremony with regimental colors underscored the purpose of the visit as a demonstration of Western resolve during the Cold War. The U.S. armed forces stationed in Germany were regarded as a central element of NATO defense and the American security guarantee for the Federal Republic.
