As part of Kennedy’s visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. military personnel were involved in security and protocol procedures alongside political representatives. The presence of American armed forces in the Federal Republic was a central element of Western defense architecture during the Cold War. Kennedy’s visit also served as a visible commitment by the United States to the security of West Germany and West Berlin.
