In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. Along the travel routes, the population received the American President with great enthusiasm. The image shows waiting spectators behind a barrier, one of them holding small American and German flags – a typical image of German-American solidarity during this visit. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall that had existed since 1961.
