In June 1963, the West German population received U.S. President John F. Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm. The photograph shows a densely packed crowd of people, such as was encountered at numerous stops during the four-day journey—from Cologne via Bonn and Frankfurt to West Berlin. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, erected two years earlier, and held high symbolic significance for the West German population.
