During his visit to Germany from June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy was received at several stops by extraordinarily large crowds. The American flags and the densely packed spectators document the enormous enthusiasm with which the West German population welcomed Kennedy. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and the construction of the Wall in 1961, and served to visibly reaffirm the American security guarantee for the Federal Republic of Germany.
