Photograph of the Berlin Wall from 1963: In the foreground, barbed wire fences; behind them, anti-tank obstacles (Spanish riders) in the border strip. The wall had been erected in August 1961 and had divided the city into East and West ever since. Kennedy inspected the border installations during his visit to Berlin on June 26, 1963 – their sight formed the visible backdrop for his declaration of solidarity with the West Berlin population.
