During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets. The photograph shows jubilant spectators waving small U.S. flags from a window and throwing confetti – a typical image of the spontaneous enthusiasm that accompanied Kennedy’s visit. Against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall erected since 1961, the presence of the American president held strong symbolic significance for the population.
