On the occasion of U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, jubilant crowds lined the streets in many places and followed the motorcade from balconies and windows. The throwing of confetti and paper scraps was part of the spontaneous welcoming gestures by the population. Kennedy’s visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the wall in 1961, and it sparked extraordinary enthusiasm in the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
