In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The visit took place in the context of the Cold War and was intended to demonstrate American solidarity with the Western world. Kennedy’s public appearances – including several speeches before large crowds – were received by the population with extraordinary enthusiasm. The highlight was the speech before the Schöneberg Town Hall in West Berlin on June 26, 1963.
