In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin – a central event of Western alliance policy during the Cold War. The photograph shows Kennedy at a reception inside a building, surrounded by delegation members and hosts. Such meetings accompanied the official stops of the journey through Cologne, Bonn, Frankfurt, and West Berlin. The visit served to reaffirm the German-American partnership in light of the continued division of Germany and the Soviet threat.
