In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The image shows reporters and press representatives amid a crowd in front of a German city center backdrop; a U.S. flag indicates the state visit. Kennedy’s journey took him from June 23 to 26 through several West German cities as well as to West Berlin. Kennedy’s visit took place under the shadow of the Cold War and against the backdrop of the construction of the Wall in 1961.
