The photograph shows a procession of clergy in white choir vestments and faithful carrying processional banners, religious figures, and crosses. The narrow street corridor is lined with multi-story Gründerzeit residential and commercial buildings; onlookers observe the procession from open windows and balconies. The scene belongs to the Cologne section of the travel film, in which the city is presented as a traditional Catholic center on the Rhine. Religious processions were a familiar feature of Cologne’s urban landscape and complemented in the film the footage of Cologne Cathedral as evidence of living ecclesiastical tradition. The image simultaneously documents the dense pre-war cityscape with historical street lighting and the Gründerzeit quarter typical of Cologne.
