Description
Roosevelt at the railway station in Berlin in 1919
Historical context
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, then Deputy Secretary of the Navy, was travelling in Berlin in 1919 – in the midst of a city recovering from the turmoil of the First World War and the beginning of the Weimar Republic. A historic photo shows him at a Berlin train station, where he symbolised the early US-American dialogue with a Germany in political and economic upheaval. His visit reflected the US government’s interest in closely following developments in Europe – even if public opinion in the US soon moved towards isolationism.
