The photograph shows the plain, light-rendered façade of the Schiller Theatre in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district with the inscription rendered in sans-serif capitals. In the right portion of the image, a uniformed person is visible standing in front of the building. The Schiller Theatre had reopened in 1951 as the first major theater building in the western part of the city and was regarded as a cultural symbol of reconstruction and Western normalcy. Its prominent presence in the 1955 US military film underscores the propagandistic function of West Berlin as the “showcase of the West”: culture and civilized urban life as a response to the Cold War system conflict. The austere architectural photograph emphasizes solidity and continuity in a city that had just risen from the rubble of the Second World War.
