The photograph shows the bright, plainly articulated exterior façade of the Schiller Theatre in the Berlin West Sector, with the lettering “SCHILLER THEATER” rendered in block capitals. Two uniformed figures — identifiable by their service caps — walk along the façade in the foreground. The Schiller Theatre on Bismarckstraße had been reopened in 1951 and was regarded as West Berlin’s cultural flagship amid the postwar period. The presence of Allied military personnel alongside the theater building exemplifies daily life in the occupied city, where civilian cultural life and military presence existed immediately adjacent to one another. The image is exemplary of West Berlin’s self-understanding as a cultural and representative “showcase of the West” during the Cold War.
