The photograph shows an elaborately designed window display of a West Berlin department store or fashion shop from 1955: two male mannequins dressed in contemporary gentlemen’s suits and hats pose in front of a large-format decorative backdrop featuring Venetian cityscapes and figurative motifs. The carefully staged presentation of men’s fashions points to the emerging consumer culture in the western part of the city. Such window displays were, in the context of the Cold War, deliberately crafted symbols of Western prosperity: West Berlin presented itself as the “showcase of the West” in contrast to the socialist East. The refined elegance of the display reflects the nascent economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder) of the Federal Republic, which gained visible foothold even in divided Berlin.
