The photograph shows the Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten, erected in 1945 to commemorate fallen Soviet soldiers. At its center stands a powerful archway of light-colored natural stone, its inscription tablets bearing the date 1945 in Russian and German, along with a dedication to the fallen. Several civilians stroll in front of the monument, which is surrounded by well-maintained hedges and trees. The memorial stood in the British sector of West Berlin but was guarded by Soviet soldiers in accordance with treaty provisions—a visible anachronism in the daily life of the divided city. As a materialized symbol of Soviet victory presence in the heart of Western Berlin, it embodies the tense status quo of the Cold War in 1955.
