The Soviet War Memorial in Treptower Park displays the monumental bronze statue of the ‘Liberator Soldier’ on its widely visible white pedestal mound, accessed by a broad staircase. Several visitors are seen on the steps and entering the entrance in the base level. Inaugurated in 1949, the memorial honored Soviet soldiers who fell in World War II and simultaneously served as a burial site for thousands of them. In divided Berlin in 1955, the war memorial located in the Soviet sector was a central symbol of Soviet presence and claims to power—a deliberately oversized counterimage to the Western Allied manifestations in the other sectors. The photograph documents that the memorial was also frequented by civilian visitors and was publicly accessible as part of the ‘Garden of Remembrance’.
