The photograph shows the Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten, taken in summer 1955. At the center stand the two characteristic triangular pylons of dark stone that flank the site; behind them extend the terraced burial fields with low hedges and dense tree coverage. Several groups of visitors—including civilians in summer clothing—walk along the expansive natural stone paving of the memorial. Erected in 1945, the war memorial lay in the British sector of West Berlin but was guarded by Soviet soldiers, standing as a permanent expression of Soviet presence in the heart of the western part of the divided city. It embodied Cold War tensions directly: a Soviet sovereign symbol in the midst of the West, attracting visitors from all parts of Berlin.
