The Soviet War Memorial in the Tiergarten presents itself as a massive triumphal arch of light-colored natural stone with bilingual inscriptions in Russian and German as well as the year 1945. The monument commemorates the Soviet soldiers who fell in the Second World War and was erected immediately after the war’s end in what was then the British sector of Berlin. Several passersby move freely across the well-maintained forecourt, underscoring the memorial’s role as a landmark in everyday life in 1955. As a symbol of Soviet sovereignty in the midst of the western part of the city, the memorial embodies the anomaly of the post-war Berlin order: it stood in the British sector but was guarded by Soviet honor guards, making it a visible symbol of the Allied Four Power rights and the Cold War in the divided city.
