The image shows the St. Canisius Church in Berlin, a striking postwar building with characteristic curved concrete barrel vaults and a slender, expressively designed bell tower. The architectural language of the building clearly belongs to postwar modernism and stands in marked contrast to the war-damaged residential building visible in the picture’s background. This juxtaposition — new church construction alongside an unrestored war ruin — encapsulates the condition of West Berlin in 1955: selective reconstruction amid the ever-present traces of destruction. Passersby and a child enliven the scene and convey an impression of daily life in the shadow of rebuilding. Church buildings of these years were also regarded as symbols of cultural and social renewal in the western part of the divided city.
