The photograph shows the Strausberger Platz U-Bahn station on Stalinallee in the East Berlin sector, photographed in summer 1955. In the background rises a characteristic residential block in socialist neoclassicism, erected along Stalinallee as part of the GDR’s construction program in the early 1950s. Clearly visible is the shop window of an HO store (Handelsorganisation), the GDR’s state retail network. The street scene with pedestrians and a child in a pram conveys an impression of everyday life in the Soviet-controlled sector. Stalinallee was regarded as a prestigious showcase project of socialist urban planning—a deliberate counterimage to the Western consumer world on the other side of the sector border. The photograph thus exemplifies the system competition in divided Berlin during the Cold War.
