The photograph shows one of the representative apartment blocks on Stalinallee in the East Berlin section, presumably photographed in 1955. The multi-story building in the style of socialist classicism—identifiable by its light-colored clinker and stone façade, profiled cornices, and broad balconies—was part of the prestige building program launched by the GDR in 1952. On the ground floor are shops with striped awnings; pedestrians, including a woman with a baby carriage, move along the sidewalk in front of the building. The well-maintained green space in the foreground underscores the propagandistic claim of the project as a socialist residential paradise. As an urban planning countermodel to Western reconstruction, Stalinallee embodied the GDR’s ideological ambitions in the Cold War system competition.
