On the ground floor are shops with striped awnings; pedestrians, including a woman with a baby carriage, move along the sidewalk in front of the building. The well-maintained green space in the foreground underscores the propagandistic claim of the project as a socialist residential paradise. As an urban planning countermodel to Western reconstruction, Stalinallee embodied the GDR’s ideological ambitions in the Cold War system competition.
