The still image shows a well-stocked refrigerated section of a supermarket with several rows of stacked egg cartons and milk packages of the ‘Danish Milk’ brand. In the foreground stands a wire shopping cart already containing a package of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes and additional dairy products. The well-assorted, fully stocked shelves point to the growing supply of goods in West Berlin in the mid-1950s. As part of an American or American-style organized supermarket, this scene embodies the concept of West Berlin as the “showcase of the West”: the abundance of American and Western European branded products stood in deliberate contrast to the supply situation in the Soviet-occupied eastern part of the city. The image simultaneously documents the introduction of modern self-service retail into Berlin’s everyday life—a symbol of the emerging economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder).
