Description
Taxi driver in Berlin 1918
Historical context
In Berlin in 1918, women increasingly entered professions that were traditionally reserved for men – including as taxi drivers. While many men travelled to the front, women took on important tasks in everyday urban life. A female taxi driver not only symbolised the assumption of essential services in a city in upheaval, but also stood for the social change that became visible in the course of the war and the revolutionary upheavals of the November Revolution.
