The theatre schedule of West Berlin’s state theatres shows the diverse programme of the Municipal Opera, the Schiller Theatre, and the Schlosspark Theatre in Steglitz for a period around the 27th of the month and into the following days. Recognizable are works such as Verdi’s *The Force of Destiny*, Shakespeare’s *Othello*, Offenbach’s *The Tales of Hoffmann*, Tolstoy’s *War and Peace*, and Goethe’s *Faust*. The placard stands emblematically for West Berlin’s cultural self-understanding in 1955: the city deliberately cultivated a rich theatrical life as part of its role as “showcase of the West” amid the Soviet occupation zone.
