The ornamental U-Bahn entrance of Uhlandstraße station — a cast-iron Art Nouveau portal from the pre-war period — dominates the center of the image amid busy street traffic in western Berlin. A large advertising poster for KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens department store) is affixed to the entrance parapet, promoting two parking spaces for customers and reflecting the growing degree of motorization in the early Federal Republic. In the background, Café Schloss Marquardt is visible, a sign of the revived gastronomic life on the Kurfürstendamm-adjacent boulevard. The image combines several characteristics of West Berlin in 1955: functioning urban infrastructure, the flourishing consumer culture of the emerging economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder), and the city’s posture as the “showcase of the West” in divided Berlin.
