The photograph shows the entrance gate of the U.S. headquarters in Berlin, photographed in summer 1955. In the foreground is a white metal gate with pointed pickets, behind it a polished brass plaque inscribed “United States Headquarters Berlin”—flanked by stars as military symbols. In the background, a representative multi-story building with a balcony is visible, in front of which stands a flagpole with the American flag. The image exemplifies the sustained Allied presence in West Berlin: ten years after the end of the war, the United States asserted its occupation sector not only militarily but also visibly in the cityscape as a protective power. The headquarters served simultaneously as a symbol of American order and authority and as a political signal in the context of the Cold War.
