The photograph shows a residential settlement at Hüttenweg in the American sector of Berlin, taken in summer 1955. Among tall pine trees rise several four-story apartment blocks in simple postwar architecture, which according to the film context of 1954–55 were constructed under the Marshall Plan. The English-language street sign “Sleward Str.” and American vehicles parked along the roadside point to the military residential area for US personnel and their dependents. Two children in the foreground convey an impression of regulated everyday life within this insulated community. The settlement exemplifies the American presence in divided Berlin: by establishing independent residential and supply structures, the USA simultaneously demonstrated the permanence of its commitment and Western living standards in the midst of the divided city.
