The photograph shows a residential settlement in southwestern Berlin that, according to the photo title, is located on Hüttenweg and served as a dependents’ housing area for the US military. Among tall pine trees stand several uniform, four-story residential blocks from the early 1950s; the English-language street sign “Steward Str.” unmistakably marks the American administrative sector. A parked automobile of American manufacture and two children in the foreground convey the image of an orderly, peaceful everyday life in the midst of the divided city. The settlement exemplifies the everyday presence of US forces in West Berlin: as a “city within a city,” such residential areas offered American personnel and their families a largely self-contained infrastructure. In the context of the Cold War, this permanent, visible presence was equally a political signal directed at the Soviet sector.
