The photograph shows the front elevation of the U.S. Army Shopping Center in Berlin-Dahlem on Hüttenweg, taken in summer 1955. The large-format sign above the entrance of the representative single-story building clearly identifies the facility as a supply installation of the US occupation forces. Uniformed and civilian-dressed persons exit the building via a broad flight of steps; a parked bicycle and a well-maintained forecourt underscore the orderly, everyday character of the place. The Shopping Center was part of the extensive infrastructure that the United States maintained for its soldiers stationed in Berlin and their families, and thus exemplifies the permanent Allied presence in the western part of the divided city. In the context of the Cold War, such a facility embodied the American standard of living as a political signal—a self-contained supply world in the midst of occupied Berlin.
