The photograph shows the US Army Shopping Center at Hüttenweg in the American sector of Berlin, taken in summer 1955. The flat, sprawling functional building with a green façade and well-stocked parking lot—American vehicles from the prewar and early postwar years dominate the image—conveys the impression of a self-contained supply infrastructure. The facility was part of the extensive self-supply structures of the US forces in Berlin, which enabled their personnel to maintain a daily life according to American standards. It exemplifies the permanent military presence of the United States in the divided city and the resulting development of its own infrastructure, largely shielded from German urban life. In the context of the Cold War, this self-sufficiency was also strategically significant: West Berlin was to be secured as a stable, capable base in the confrontation zone between East and West.
