The photograph shows a well-stocked fruit and vegetable stand at a Berlin weekly market in summer 1955. Apples, pears, cherries, bananas, and other fruits are piled high in wooden crates on the sales tables; shoppers in everyday clothing select goods, while a market vendor attends customers in the background. The massive building in the rear suggests a market hall or railway station in the immediate vicinity. The abundance of goods contrasts with the acute postwar scarcity and points to the emerging economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder) in the western part of the city. As part of a US military film documenting civilian life in Berlin, the scene records the everyday life of West Berlin’s population and simultaneously illustrates West Berlin’s self-image as the “showcase of the West” in contrast to the Soviet-controlled eastern part of the divided city.
