In the period leading up to D-Day, June 6, 1944, Allied forces assembled along the south English coast to be loaded for the crossing to Normandy. Jack Lieb documented this deployment phase with his 16-mm Kodachrome camera in color – a rare document, since corresponding footage from this period is otherwise preserved almost exclusively in black and white. The scene belongs to the opening phase of Lieb’s film, which traces the path from the preparations in England to Germany.
