In the lead-up to D-Day (6 June 1944), southern England transformed into a vast assembly area for the invasion forces. Control posts such as this one regulated traffic and secured the movements of units, materiel, and personnel within the densely occupied staging zone. The signage reading ‘HALT – CONTROL POST’ as well as British road signs point to the close cooperation between Allied and British authorities in the logistical preparation of Operation Overlord. Jack Lieb captured this everyday scene of invasion preparations as rare color footage before he himself crossed over with the troops.
