The photograph was taken during the Normandy invasion of June 1944 and shows US Marine personnel aboard a small vessel within the Allied invasion fleet. Landing ships of the LST (Landing Ship, Tank) type formed the backbone of supply operations along the Norman coast; they transported troops, vehicles, and materiel to the beaches and enabled the establishment of the Allied beachhead. Jack Lieb landed with an element of the 82nd Airborne Division at Utah Beach and documented the crossing and assembly in rare Kodachrome color footage.
