This still from Jack Lieb’s color film shows the crossing of the Allied invasion fleet through the English Channel during the night of June 5-6, 1944. In the background, characteristic chalk cliffs of the south English coast are visible—probably the Isle of Wight or the Dorset coast—which the convoy formation passed when leaving English waters. The crossing was the logistical peak of Operation Overlord: thousands of ships transported troops, vehicles, and material to the Normandy coast. Lieb was present with an element of the 82nd Airborne Division and subsequently landed at Utah Beach.
