On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance launched an armed uprising against the German garrison in Paris – the prelude to the liberation of the city, which ended on August 25 with the surrender of the German city commandant General Dietrich von Choltitz. During these days, street fighting, disarmament operations, and arrests of occupation personnel and collaborators took place throughout the city. Jack Lieb documented this phase as one of the few cameramen working in color; his 16-mm Kodachrome material is among the rare color testimonies of the Paris uprising days.
