On August 19, 1944, the French Resistance began its open uprising against German occupation of Paris – the prelude to the city’s complete liberation by August 25. In this context, the photograph shows an arrest, as occurred frequently in the first days of fighting: collaborators, suspects, or disarmed German soldiers were apprehended by Resistance fighters and regular French forces. Jack Lieb was among the few cameramen who documented these events in color; his 16-mm Kodachrome material is a rare color source on the liberation of Paris.
