On August 19, 1944, the French Resistance in Paris began an armed uprising against German occupation—the opening phase of the city’s multi-day liberation. In this context, collaborators and suspected persons were arrested by the population and resistance fighters. Jack Lieb captured such scenes on his private Kodachrome color film, while Allied troops under General Leclerc simultaneously advanced on Paris from outside the city. The complete capitulation of the German city commandant General von Choltitz took place on August 25, 1944.
