On 19 August 1944, the French Résistance in Paris began an open uprising against German occupation — the prelude to the liberation of the city, which lasted until 25 August. In this context, arrests of suspected collaborators and remaining occupation personnel took place in many places by the population and resistance fighters. Jack Lieb documented this phase with his 16-mm Kodachrome camera as part of his sequence on the liberation of Paris, which follows in his film the advance over Versailles.
